Phu Pha Lek National Park
Phu Pha Lek national park contains areas in Song Dao, Warich Phum, Nikom Nan Oon, and Kud Bak districts of
Sakon Nakhon province;
Sam Mor district of Udon Thani province; and Somdej and Kham Muang districts of Kalasin province.
The park is approximately 419 square kilometers wide with
its headquarters in Song Dao district.
The park where average elevation is 200 to 600 meters above the sea is part of Phu Phan mountain range.
The highest peak, Phu Ang Sor, is 695 meters high. The area stores head waters for streams such as
Songkram, Yam, Oom and so on. Forest types include dry evergreen, mixed deciduous, and dry dipterocarp.
During the hottest period from early March to end of May the average highest temperature could be around
40º C, resulting frequent forest fires.
Rainy season comes in June and usually ends in October.
Then in November comes the cool season which normally lasts until February. The average temperature in the
cool period is around 15 to 20º C.
The park offers some scenic high elevation spots for panorama views of sun-set and sun-rise, the forest and
the surrounding places. Star watching tower was built at the summit of Phu Pha Lek.
Up to December 2003 there were no accommodations available for the overnight visitors. Camping is possible,
howevers campers have to bring their own gear.
