Learning class for young people (03 January 2004)
26 April 2007 The project has been closed due to overload and lack of manpower.
We will now focus on training of internship students, and assistance to the rural under-privileged areas such as
villages in the mountains along Thai-Myanmar border and in Laos where we operate small group nature/culture
awareness trips.
In the early 2002 we started to manage an educational class to those who have no access to the good education.
This project is free of charge learning center. Learners do not need to pay anything.
However since we have very very limited
resources, we can accept up to only three people at a time.
What we have
- Several simplified short story books in English
- Cuttings from The Nation and Bangkok Post English language newspapers
- English dictionary, picture dictionary, a couple of grammar books
- Various maps of Thailand, Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia; and world map
- Books about places in South East Asia (travel related)
- Various other literature in both English and Thai
- Hundreds of photos taken in various parts of the region
- One white board: 40cm x 60cm
- One old computer
- One scanner
- One fax machine
- Writing equipment, papers, calendar
- One round table and chairs as seen in the picture on the right
We do not have a real teacher; however there is one who will be the leader in the class. This
person is not a native English speaker.
Our way of learning
Students are asked what they want to know, and what they want to do in the future. We learn basic English reading, speaking and writing.
Students are allowed to reason, make arguement, and talk what thay want to talk. All learners will see the things in wider, deeper and in details.
For example, when reading a story in the current news students are asked to discover more than what is written.
If the news show the time frame of, say, 1990 to 2003 we would want to study more into the history to know what really make things go that way.
We also discuss about the reality, the truth, the wrongs, the lies, and the secrets or unknowns, and what is not written.
We do talk about the flow of love, respect, resources, people, materials both good and bad, and so on around the world.
There is nothing we can not discuss.
However at first everyone need to learn basic English, because the discussion are all made in English.
If a student has poor English he or she may take at least 10 to 12 months to be able to discuss, reason and argue in English.
During the course of learning English we also try to let the students take good attitute, sense of responsibility
for the safe, healthy and peaceful
community, desire to know more and in details, understanding and equal treatment to all people around the
world regardless of nationality, color, religion and social status.
Activities
We do reading and drawing of maps.
At the begining we would study the map of Thailand, South East Asia and then go ahead to the world map.
Students would learn the places, relative locations, distances, weather, north-south-east-west orientation, use of a magnatic compass, contour map reading, etc.
Then they would create their own map of their apartment or homes locations, roads and way to the class room.
We also draw the layout diagram of our room, and apartments. Measuring tape is used to check the measurement
of floor size, ceiling height, doors and windows sizes, etc.
We have observation of our environment; the air, water, the streets, and the surroundings.
We talk, ask and find out answers for so many why's.
We have research jobs under the topics selected by the students and / or the leader, or for the office.
We use Internet, libraries in our area, newspapers and magazines. We also contact government departments
and other related organizations, companies, and persons concerned to get the required information.
Intake
We do not accept any phone, fax or email contact.
We find students ourselves. Once or twice a year we advertise in the schools and universities in our surrounding.
